MacOS edition transitioning to 64-bits

Post by guest »

As announced elsewhere, the current release of BBCSDL (version 0.28a) will be the last in which the MacOS edition is 32-bits. Apple stated some time ago that they would be dropping support for 32-bit apps, and in MacOS 10.14 (Mojave) any such apps result in a warning when executed. Therefore I have known for a while that, sooner or later, I would have to transition the MacOS edition of BBCSDL to 64-bits.

I might not have chosen to do so now, had it not been for the 'fatal' hardware failure of the machine on which the MacOS edition has been built to date. It wouldn't have been sensible to try to reinstate the 32-bit build on new hardware, so the next release will be 64-bits. Inevitably there are some compatibility implications: although all the supplied example programs will run as before, that may not be true of users' own BASIC programs if they have not been written with 64-bit operation in mind.

So can I urge all users of the MacOS edition to review the 64-bit compatibility guidelines here and ensure that any BBC BASIC programs they may wish to continue to run on MacOS are amended accordingly, if necessary.

Would anybody like to try a pre-release 64-bit MacOS edition before it becomes more generally available?
