Forum software updated

Post by guest »

As part of the recovery process the forum software has been updated from phpBB version 3.2.2 to 3.3.0. It may take a little while for this change to 'bed in' and you may notice some anomalies (for example we have currently lost the forum's logo; I will try to work out how to reinstate it). If you notice something not working please report it in this thread (although I may well not have the foggiest idea how to fix it!).

I think the logo has been successfully reinstated. There's a list of the changes in phpBB 3.3.0 here but it's not exactly light reading!

Can I remind everybody that it's possible to configure the forum to send an email notification whenever a new message is posted. Unfortunately there isn't one 'global' setting, you have to do it for each individual sub-forum category (of which there are seventeen in all) but it only takes a short time:
  1. On the forum's front page, click on a category (e.g. Announcements).
  2. Scroll down to the very bottom.
  3. Click on 'Subscribe forum' in the bottom bar (a tick means you're not subscribed, which is slightly confusing).
  4. Return to the front page and repeat for each category.

One unfortunate change is that it's no longer possible for an admin (or anybody) to backup the forum directly to their own PC. This change was apparently instituted on the grounds of 'security' but it places more reliance on the hosting service than I would ideally like.
