Can anybody explain the significance of the question marks in these topic titles?

Interesting! I see the first one, but not the second. Hovering over it, it says "At least one topic in this forum has not been approved - but can't see which one... OK, found it.

Ah, so it's an indication of an unapproved topic - I had no idea. Thanks.

And indeed there's an unapproved (spam) post:

Odder and odder!

I wasn't questioning your veracity, Richard, merely stating that I can't see it - and I still can't see either the question mark or the unapproved post, either in the main list, or in the moderation queue, or in my notifications (which normally shows any such posts). The moderation log doesn't show any one else dealing with it, either.

Could it be related to your recent experiments with Svein to move the site? Could you be seeing something related to that, which I can't see?

Best wishes,

D

I can't see how. Neither Svein nor I have made any significant progress in moving the forum, but in any case nothing that we could have done would have had any impact on the existing forum, since we don't have any admin access. If this remains a mystery I suggest you check to see if anybody else has reported it at the phpBB Community Forum, and if not perhaps do so yourself.

Of course they may simply say that as you're not running the latest version you should upgrade and see if the problem fixes itself. Indeed it may well be that the issues Svein and I have been having would also be resolved by upgrading, so that could generally be a useful thing to consider. I assume you can update the forum without my assistance, but if there's something I need to do at the 'hosting' side let me know.

I see. I must be hallucinating then, could be a symptom of my dementia I suppose. Forget I ever mentioned it.
