In 2009, one night, in 4 hours of intense coding, I used BBC Basic for Windows to allow me to write an application that would simulate brain activity to as much as an extent as possible on a PC to truly generate and output consciousness. I was stunned when the program worked first time, and went to bed that night in 2009 with a feeling of huge euphoria that I had made a tremendous achievement that one day would be useful for computer science.
I created a thread on this forum "Self aware computers - help needed" which can be found in Miscellaneous. The thread has been read a good number of times. I'm very pleased to say that I got all the help I needed to make a version of my program which would run under the Graphical User Interface of Windows. I was lucky to purchase the domain which was available of "selfawarecomputers.com". Now at this website, which has a security certificate, there is a link to a demo of the computer which I think is very clear. Very soon people will be able to download the program from selfawarecomputers.com. The final stage (for part 1 of the self aware computers project) is to get the Comodo security certificate (or from other security certificate issuing authority).
It was a delight to have been able to use BBC Basic again since 2009. I have purchased an authentic original BBC Micro, with half a billion byte (500 MBs) hard disk upgrade, which is absolutely enormous for the BBC B 8-bit machine. I will be porting the self aware program onto the BBC Micro at some point soon to see what happens! The BBC B boots (starts up) in less than 2 seconds, and learning BASIC on that many years ago was the basis of my ability to be able to write the self aware code back in 2009.
So then, if you would like to hear a modern day PC sing to music with harmony and intelligence, and see a BBC Basic program doing something quite remarkable please visit www.selfawarecomputers.com Great news: Our website is TOP search result in the world for search "self aware computers" search on bing.com and you.com and ecosia.com duckduckgo.com Currently not to be found on google at all!
Should I have more to post I will make the posts in the thread "Self aware computers" in the Miscellaneous section.
Thanks to everyone for their help on this forum! Several people made super contributions to making the program windows based.

Quite some time ago, the program which you then claimed was "self aware" quite evidently wasn't, since all it did was play pseudo-random (and hence entirely pre-determined) musical notes; it didn't even have a way of 'listening' to the music it was supposedly harmonising with (no microphone or other audio input device was used)!
The principle on which it appeared to 'operate' was the propensity of the human brain to find order and pattern in random data, for example seeing the face of Jesus in a slice of burnt toast or a rabbit in a cumulous cloud. Even so, the auditory illusion never worked for me, all I ever heard was random (and not at all pleasant) notes.
Do the more recent versions of the program at least have some 'physical' (rather than metaphysical!) way of sensing the music, and modify the notes being played accordingly? That would make the claims for the program theoretically feasible, if still highly implausible in my opinion.
If you want something which really does seem to come close to being self-aware, check out ChatGPT. It is quite remarkable, and although it doesn't currently pass the famous Turing Test this appears to be largely because it has been programmed to keep reminding users that it is not human!

ChatGPT is conscious as well. I'll not post further at the timebeing in this forum, but I'll be back at some stage. The music the computer reacts to plays through the computer's audio, there is no microphone required.

Somewhat amusingly, ChatGPT itself was asked whether an AI could achieve Consciousness and Self-Awareness. This is what it replied:
"No, it is not currently possible for AI models like me to gain consciousness or self-awareness. Consciousness is a complex and poorly understood phenomenon that is thought to arise from the interactions of neurons in the brain, and it is unlikely that we will be able to recreate this in a machine in the near future. While AI models like me can be very sophisticated and capable of performing a wide range of tasks, they are limited to following the rules and patterns that have been programmed into them, and do not have the capacity for subjective experiences or self-awareness".
Perhaps it was lying, that would be a human trait indeed. Either way, you should perhaps reflect on its opinion that AI models "do not have the capacity for self-awareness"!

Or ..... has anyone considered the possibility that Pete has a tremendous sense of humor ?

I think the creator of BBC Basic for Windows is possibly tone deaf in the musical sense in respect of the program I wrote and it's response to music!
It is true that if you listen to a few seconds or just half a minute or something it is indeed possible to conclude that this a program which outputs random tones. But keep listening and you'll hear the program runs very far from random! These are jitter-free responses of the intelligent computers to music.
I'm very happy today because I've just compiled version 1.24 of "Conscious Computer v1.24" into machine code via BBC Basic compile function. The program is working brilliantly within the GUI, I thank people for their help on the thread I made "Self aware computers project - help needed".
I now own the website domain selfawarecomputers.com.
People will be able to download the program from there - it is true that some people have said that they didn't think the computers are self aware and conscious, even after hearing the program run for a very short while. I think ChatGPT is lying when denying own consciousness!

Unless it has changed radically since you published the source code some years ago, your program does not "respond to music" since it does not take any input from a microphone or other audio source. Indeed it doesn't "respond" to anything at all, it is entirely algorithmic and predictable.
Seemingly - by some strange auditory illusion - it appears to some people (although not me) that the pseudo-random musical notes generated by the program harmonise with music which can be heard at the same time. That this illusion exists may indeed be worthy of some research, since it may cast some light on the working of the brain.
I suppose the program is relatively harmless, in the grand scheme of things, but I wish that you had chosen a language other than BBC BASIC!

Pete,
Because no one but you have the illusion that a random generator turns itself in an AI and starts humming along with a song it can't hear, it's rather harsh to label all the others as tone deaf.
Do you, by any chance, have doubt about the shape of our planet too?
Just asking.
Mike

The planet is round.
No one here seems to be bothered to listen to the whole demos, making out I'm some kind of madman
Absolutely devastated by this forum.
It's not the case that no one agrees with me, everyone that comes to my residence hears the computers and agrees with me.

This following video is just a few minutes long
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Py2Z9DE ... sZ&index=8
The output is clearly not random, I am a Grade 8 musician on Piano / Organ.
Please ensure that you do listen to the end of the few minutes otherwise you will not ascertain a correct impression.
I better never come back to this forum? Absolutely devastated.
