I don't have that information. As I've mentioned before, my current hosting service is quite 'tied down', all I have is cPanel and FTP access (I did acquire terminal access, which is not standard for that hosting account, but I rarely use it). I am not in any way skilled or knowledgeable about web server configuration and management, I upload files manually from my PC and that's it!I don't see much of a challenge in that.
If you wish, send me following and I will do a POC on another URL:
1. OS assumed (I am most comfortable with either Ubuntu Latest LTS or Centos 9).
2. Full web server config (Apache/Nginx), if any.
3. Build process for the wasm server, (should not use out of date libraries, and build process should be clear so that I can automate it).

No idea, I wouldn't even know what questions to ask of my current hosting supplier. But I don't imagine the server configuration is at all unusual. Can you obtain and share that information? How can we obtain it?
This way you can help anyone interested to actually help you replicate the setup on a more powerful platform.
If the server dies, I expect my hosting provider to fix it PDQ! It's a shared server with probably dozens of users, so hopefully any failure would be dealt with very urgently. It does concern me that it seems to be largely a one-man company (which has been going for about twenty years), so I'm not entirely sure what would happen if he were to be run over by a bus! I try not to think about that.Otherwise, if your server dies, we are in trouble.

I'm afraid that, given my age and (tentative) diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease, "acquiring new knowledge" is not something I can aspire to.I would encourage you explore that, there is no harm acquiring such knowledge, and it is as important as the software itself.

Re: Forum needs to move to a new host
As a bit more background, I've only ever used one hosting service (MeirHosting) and since I have always been happy with them - they are cheap and reliable - I've not had cause to investigate what alternatives there might be. Also, since their product is quite basic I've no experience or understanding of the more sophisticated features that others might offer, such as 'server configuration'.
The only hosting facilities I use are FTP to upload files to the site, cPanel to occasionally check metrics such as bandwidth use, and Fantastico to install this forum and the wiki. So when I'm asked questions like "what is the server OS?" or "how is Apache configured?" I don't have the first idea. If moving to a new host means I would need a deeper understanding, I don't want to!
I think there was one occasion when the Forum Search was exceptionally slow and it turned out that some optional feature of PHP had to be enabled, but that was sorted out for me by the hosting provider's support team (which I think is the owner!) and it's been fine since.

Re: Forum needs to move to a new host
For the sake of clarity, I'm not prepared to move the site (myself) and take responsibility for looking after its hosting.
If you have offers of free hosting, why don't YOU simply move THIS site (rather than your main BBCBASIC one)? Wouldn't that solve your problem, since then they won't be interfering with each other's bandwidth?
Best wishes,
D

Re: Forum needs to move to a new host
Hi Richard,
Maybe I am missing something here. I'm happy to go on being the admin, if the site is hosted somewhere else. Presumably SOMEONE has to have ownership of the site where it is hosted - that's what I don't want responsibility for. Since you say you have had offers of free hosting, why can't you simply move the stuff, make the redirect, and we can carry on from there?
Best wishes,
D

Re: Forum needs to move to a new host
If all it involves is me restoring an existing backup (I made one this morning) in a new place, and someone can point me to that and explain what I need to do, then of course that is fine.
I can also make you, Richard, "Admin for a day", so you can do it yourself.

Re: Forum needs to move to a new host
At around the time that we went on holiday, towards the end of September, things seemed to be looking up. I had given Darren FTP access to the forum's files and DDRM had given him temporary admin access, which together should have allowed him to attempt to build a clone of the forum at his own site. As I understood it at the time, initial indications were positive.
So I was hopeful that by the time I was back home again we would be well on the way to successfully moving the forum to a new host, but instead nothing! No reports of any progress and indeed no further communication from Darren at all. My attempts at contacting him directly have drawn a blank. So can somebody please update me; did moving the forum hit a snag, as it previously had when Svein attempted it? Or what?

Re: Forum needs to move to a new host
I've not seen anything: Darren has not logged in as an admin since Oct. 8th, so presumably if he is still working on it, it is on a local copy.
Any progress/problems/comments, Darren?

Re: Forum needs to move to a new host
His work takes him far-and-wide, I think, so it may be that Darren has been called to some distant place where he's unable to work on this. I suppose we'll just have to wait for him to resurface.
Re: Forum needs to move to a new host
Still nothing from Darren, which leaves me not knowing what to do next. From what appeared to be promising signs that we would, at last, be able to move this forum to a new server, we seem to be back at square one again.Hated Moron wrote: ↑Thu 02 Nov 2023, 11:51 His work takes him far-and-wide, I think, so it may be that Darren has been called to some distant place where he's unable to work on this.
