Win10 and backup

I have written my own backup utility which goes through the hard drive (or specified directories on the hard drive) reading the file info for each file and comparing it with that of the backup. If the date is newer the file is backed up to the backup drive. If the hard drive Is longer but not newer, it is flagged as a possible corruption. This worked just fine with XP and Vista, but with Win10 there is some sort of problem.

Files with the extension .bbc, .dat or .txt cause the program to pause for 30 seconds (approx.) Other files, such as .jpg or .mp3, are read and processed rapidly. Does anyone have any idea why or any ideas on how to speed things up?

Being scanned by your anti-virus software, perhaps? Disable it to see if it makes a difference. What process does Task Manager show is busy during those 30 seconds?

Hmmmm. Thanks for the tip. Something called "Antimalware Service Executable" changes from 3% to 20% during such delays. It appears to be part of Windows Defender Antivirus. I wonder if I can set up an exclusion list so that it learns which programs are safe?
